Rockbox
I have a Sansa c200 and came across an open source firmware alternative called Rockbox. This firmware upgrade added quite a bit of extra functionality to my existing device and is customizable. Rockbox supports more codecs including OGG and FLAC. I was also even able to play the video game Doom on the device and although the screen is small, it was a good benchmark for how powerful the processor is on my device.
Here is a firmware comparison chart between your stock OS versus Rockbox: FeatureComparison < Main < TWiki I had a bit of trouble this morning installing it because I did it with a device that was already full of music. My recommendation is to clear your device completely and start from scratch. This was fine for me because I had music on there from a year and half ago. Ok, so I tried it..it is different has a lot of features, but I uninstalled, guess I just like simple when it comes to MP3 players.
